Coleus Amboinicus

Ever heard of it? This herb goes by many names: Indian Borage, Mexican Mint, Cuban Oregano, French Thyme, Spanish Thyme, and many more. It seems to have claimed a lot of countries!

But in Malay, it’s best known as Daun Lemuju or Bangun bangun. Recognize that name? Many people have seen, planted, or used it.

Daun Lemuju is a type of perennial herb and is considered semi-succulent. It’s called semi-succulent because, even though it’s fleshy, thick, and stores water, it doesn’t tolerate very hot and dry weather well.

This herb is incredibly easy to grow. Just stick a cutting in the soil and it will thrive! That’s why you’ll find it in many households. While it does produce flowers and seeds, it takes a long time to bloom, making planting cuttings the easiest method.

Alright! Now that we know how to plant it, let’s look at how to use it and its benefits.

The part of the herb most commonly used is its leaves. When you pick the leaves, the first thing you’ll notice is the smell. Westerners say it’s like oregano, but to me, it’s like mint, only much stronger.

My family often uses it as a remedy for coughs, colds, and respiratory issues. Here’s how: soak 4-5 leaves in a cup of freshly boiled water. Drink it while it’s warm, and it’s like drinking cough syrup. It cools and soothes your entire throat. Usually, 2-3 cups are enough to relieve a cough.

Lemuju is also excellent for skin problems like insect bites, stings, eczema, and psoriasis. We use it by crushing the leaves and applying them to the affected area.

To reduce fever in children, place the crushed leaves on the neck, forehead, and body.

It also helps with urination and removing excess salt and water from the body, which is important for kidney and lymphatic health.

Apart from these, I’ve found out that:

1. It’s high in omega-6.

2. Contains vitamins A and C.

3. Acts as aromatherapy to reduce stress and anxiety.

So there you have it, the benefits of Daun Lemuju, also known as Indian Borage or by its many other names.

It’s easy to grow but incredibly beneficial. Every household should have at least one plant. No need to buy cough syrup anymore!
