Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has been summoned by the police to provide a statement on August 20 regarding a controversial speech he delivered during the recent Nenggiri by-election campaign. The speech in question has stirred significant public and political backlash due to its alleged references to sensitive issues related to race, religion, and royalty, collectively known as the 3R issues.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed that the police have received 29 reports from various individuals and groups concerning Muhyiddin’s remarks. These reports have prompted the authorities to take action and investigate the allegations further. "We are calling him to provide his statement on August 20 to assist in the ongoing investigation," said Tan Sri Razarudin when contacted by Bernama.
The controversy erupted after a video of Muhyiddin’s speech went viral, with some viewers claiming that the former Prime Minister’s comments questioned the sovereignty of Sultan Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. The Sultan served as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, and any perceived affront to the monarchy is considered a serious issue in Malaysia.
In response to the incident, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail publicly expressed his disapproval of Muhyiddin’s statements. In a Facebook post, Wan Rosdy criticized the Pagoh MP’s remarks and called on the authorities to take appropriate action against him, underscoring the sensitivity surrounding the 3R issues in Malaysian politics.
As the investigation proceeds, Muhyiddin Yassin will be required to clarify his comments and address the concerns raised by the numerous reports filed against him. The case highlights the ongoing tensions and complexities related to political discourse in Malaysia, especially when it involves issues that touch on race, religion, and the monarchy.
The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for Malaysian politics, particularly for Perikatan Nasional and its leadership. As the situation develops, both public and political figures will be watching closely to see how the authorities handle the matter and what impact it may have on the broader political landscape.
