Last night, a six-year-old boy went on a joyride in his family’s Toyota Vios and drove for about 2.5 kilometres before crashing into a lamp post on Jalan Bukit Tangga.
His three-year-old brother was along for the ride, but thankfully, he came out unscathed. The little driver himself only suffered a cut on his chin. Can you imagine a six-year-old behind the wheel?
According to Langkawi police chief ACP Shariman Ashari, the boys had snuck out of their house without their parents’ knowledge. Their mother was in the bathroom, and their father was fast asleep. The boys must have thought it would be fun to take the car for a spin. They didn’t make it very far, and unfortunately ended up causing quite a commotion.
A concerned member of the public called the authorities at 11:15 pm.
People gathered around, shocked and in disbelief of what they were seeing. As stated in New Straits Times, the boys were driving to a shop, with one of them handling the steering while the other stepped on the accelerator.
Now, the car has suffered major damages, and the police are investigating the incident under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
This incident is a stark reminder that you never know what can happen when children are left unattended. It’s a good thing that no one was seriously injured in this incident, but it could have been much worse.
