SANDAKAN: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) branch here seized 4,000 litres of diesel worth RM9,600 from a store at Batu 9, Kg Melayu, here, Wednesday.
Sandakan KPDN Head Azdy Zukkry John on Thursday said the seizure was made during a 4pm Ops Tiris.
He said the team also detained a 64-year-old local man and seized an engine pump and two units of hose.
The man was released on police bail after having his statement recorded to facilitate investigations.
Azdy said that this is the first success for the Sabah KPDN, notably Sandakan, under the ongoing Ops Tiris, which runs from March 1 to August.
Meanwhile, the seizure occurred after a three-day surveillance of the store. Their monitoring revealed that oil tankers would stop at the premises, which is located in a fenced-in location that is difficult to view from the outside.
The Sandakan KPDN team is also investigating whether the diesel is obtained from industrial sectors or petrol kiosks.
He said they believe the activity has been going on for the past two years.
“We will continue our look out for similar activities in other areas to ensure there is no leakage involving subsidised petrol in Sandakan,” he said.
On another development, Azdy urge the public to contact the KPDN should they come across shortage of sugar, cooking oil, flour and eggs, especially throughout the Fasting Month.
“We have held meetings with suppliers and wholesalers to ensure there is no shortage of these daily necessities,” he said.
Those with complaints, inquiries or information related to violation of laws under the KPDN can contact the Ministry via WhatsApp 0192794317 or 019848800.
