While #GenZ have their own interesting way of living out our lives, we can't deny the high pressure that's always placed on us to do well, especially among the intense competition that has formed between the generations today. This makes us work even harder, and we want everything to be perfect, we always want to be the best at everything and never give up (stubborn haha). While being persistent is a good trait to have, being a perfectionist often limits your our own progress and negatively impacts the relationships you have with others. Here are 4 ways to stop being a perfectionist:
Play more games (reasonably)
Games teach you how to fail and manage your emotions privately when you do. Often times, you'll have to repeat rounds multiple times before you actually pass to the next level. This teaches you the lesson of persistence and improvement at every repeated round. There's a reason that gamification is a practice in many large corporations when providing learning and development to employees - it's a safe space to test out insane theories and strategies, and no real business expense. No matter how bad you are at the game, always remember - there's no consequences even if you don't win!
Have a hobby
Let it be a safe space for you to be vulnerable. Most times your hobby is something that you enjoy doing, but are not necessarily the best at it. Find something you can laugh at yourself about when you fail, yet is a good memory to constantly remind yourself that not everything needs to be perfect all the time. Extra points if you can create a physical or digital item that you can see everyday as a reminder!
Learn how to say NO
Even when it's to yourself. Sometimes you know deep inside that you don't feel like or want to do something, but your perfectionist self won't let you and you end up mentally guilt-tripping yourself into doing it. Once or twice is fine, but it eventually burns you out and you lose autonomy over your own decision. Remember, this life is yours and it's all up to you on what you want to or do not want to do. Learning to choose the best for yourself is difficult, but absolutely necessary to keep yourself mentally, emotionally and physically healthy for the long-run. It takes time, but you'll need to learn how to manage your ego.
Travel - by yourself or with loved ones
Travelling is a fun and memorable activity, yet can get extremely messy, clumsy and very prone to errors, especially in new cities or countries. You almost never follow your plan 100% and end up improvising parts where you'll need to learn how to be more flexible with your arrangements and self. Does it mean that your planning has failed when the trip doesn't follow your itinerary exactly? Absolutely not! It just shows that you can enjoy yourself and make memories even when something is not perfect, and who knows - it might even be better than your planned itinerary!
Remember, these are things that takes a lot of time and courage to change, so don't feel too bad if you feel like you're not making progress. Keep trying again and you'll see some good progress!
