40 Malabon pumping stations ready for floods

MALABON City assured its residents that the local government has maximized its resources to implement all anti-flood measures, including the full operation of 40 pumping stations strategically located across the city.

Mayor Jeannie Sandoval and City Administrator Alex Rosete told The Manila Times in separate interviews that they met with concerned city and village officials, along with the Malabon Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), to ensure that all plans and efforts would be carried out to the fullest.

“The safety of every Malabueño home is our primary priority. We have overcome many disasters that have struck our city by standing united. Now that the rainy season is upon us once again, we will carry on the spirit of ‘bayanihan’ (community cooperation) and compassion for our fellow citizens,” Sandoval said.

“Our emergency response teams remain on standby, and we are continuously preparing for any impact of severe weather to ensure a swift and well-coordinated response to the needs of our people,” she added.

Rosete said the mayor was more concerned about flooding, which worsens during heavy rains and typhoons. Hence, she wanted to ensure that all 40 pumping stations located in different villages were properly maintained and functional.

He said pre-disaster risk assessment meetings are conducted when necessary to evaluate potential impacts and determine appropriate response actions.

“Disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility. When the government, communities, and households continually work together, we become more prepared and resilient in facing the challenges of calamities and disasters,” Rosete said.

“It is far better that we are prepared and united in supporting the government’s initiatives, because this is for the welfare of every citizen,” he added.

Mayor Sandoval reiterated that all response clusters and concerned offices have been instructed to ensure that resources, facilities, and personnel are ready.

Readiness includes stockpiling food and nonfood items, inspecting critical facilities, and maintaining operational readiness at the Emergency Operations Center.

While evacuation facilities such as schools, covered courts, and public buildings have been identified and assessed for readiness, Sandoval said coordination with the Schools Division Office is also being strengthened to ensure the availability of evacuation centers and the continuation of classes when needed.

Barangay authorities have been directed to update their contingency and evacuation plans, monitor high-risk areas, disseminate warnings and advisories, and support evacuation, rescue, and relief operations when necessary.

The top city officials reassured residents that relief assistance will be distributed in an orderly, transparent, and equitable manner, with priority given to vulnerable individuals and families who may be affected by severe weather conditions.
