To ensure adequate drinking water supply to the town, the Shimla Municipal Corporation has decided to build 40 water tanks. Aimed at increasing the total water storage capacity, the tanks will be constructed across 34 wards of the corporation.
Mayor Surinder Chuahan, along with a team of officials, is visiting the sites designated for the construction of the water tanks.
As per the Mayor, the construction work is underway and efforts are being made to make these water tanks available to people at the earliest. The Mayor said the plan was to construct about 40 tanks across the state capital and the work had been initiated for 21 tanks. “The tanks will be ready within next six months, which will further enhance the total drinking water storage capacity of Shimla. Once the tanks are ready, the people will be relieved of the drinking water shortage, especially during the summer and monsoon seasons” he said.
About the total storage capacity, the Mayor said the size of a tank will depend on the total area available for its construction. “In wards with ample space, water tanks having capacity to store 2 Millions of Litres Per Day (MLD) water will be constructed, while tanks up to 1 MLD capacity will be constructed in wards where limited land is available,” he said.
The Mayor added that the corporation has been working to ensure 24×7 drinking water supply to the town and has started to lift drinking water from Sutlej earlier this year. He said the ambitious Shakroli drinking water scheme will be ready soon, through which Shimla will get additional drinking water.
