Kota Kinabalu: More road crashes were recorded under ‘Op Selamat 19’ that was launched in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration compared to the same period under ‘Op Selamat 17’.
State Police Commissioner Datuk Idris bin Abdullah said a total of 409 accidents were reported from Jan 18 until 24 compared to 303 accidents under the same period before.
He said this showed an increase of 106 cases which was 35 per cent and five people died compared to six under ‘Op Selamat 17’.
“During ‘Op Selamat 19’, a total of 157 operations were carried out and 6,845 summonses were issued against road users for various offences.
“A total of 19 people were arrested under Section 45(1) APJ 1987 (Drunk), Section 6(1)© Immigration Act 1959/63, Section 15(1)(a) of Dangerous Drug Act 1952 and Section 379(A) of the Penal Code.
“During the operation, a total of 44 vehicles of various types were seized for various offences,” Idris said here on Thursday.
For burglary, he said a total of 25 cases were reported, but none from house owners who informed the police before going on holidays.
He said police conducted a total of 1,189 visits to 100 houses whose owners filled up forms that they would go back to their hometowns or villages during the ‘Op Selamat 19’.
“I hope that all levels of society and road users in general are always careful and practise tolerance when driving on the road.
“Road safety is our shared responsibility so that we can reduce the number of accidents during this festive season. May the Chinese New Year 2023 be celebrated joyfully and safely,” Idris said.
