PENAMPANG: Police here issued a total of 483 traffic summonses during Op Selamat 24 in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration from March 29 to April 3.

The operation, aimed at ensuring road user safety during the festive season, saw a massive 413.83 per cent increase in summonses compared to the 94 summonses recorded during the same operation last year.

Penampang District Police Chief Supt Sammy Newton said the operation focused on reducing road accidents and protecting public safety, particularly those returning to their respective hometowns.

Police personnel were stationed at key locations, including major intersections, high-risk accident zones and areas where there were high concentration of people.

A total of 39 operations were carried out during the Op Selamat 24 which included Op Selamat, Op Mabuk, Op Samseng Jalanan and Op Lancar.

Three people were also detained under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and two motorcycles seized under Section 64 (1) of the same Act.

Throughout the Op Selamat Hari Raya 2025, a total of 23 accidents involving vehicle damages were recorded, matching the number from Op Selamat Hari Raya 2024.

The public are reminded to comply with traffic laws, avoid driving under fatigue or alcohol influence, and to secure their homes before leaving for holidays.
