The Road Transport Department Malaysia (JPJ) detained two illegal drivers at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 who offered unlicensed taxi services to tourists.

One of the detained, a 46-year-old Perodua Alza driver, was seen ‘begging’ and convincing Bangladeshi tourists to take his ride for RM80 from the airport to Petaling Jaya.

The payment was expected to be made when the tourists safely reached their destination. Another 56-year-old illegal driver, who also drove a Perodua Alza, convinced tourists from Myanmar to take his ride for RM60 from the airport to the Nanyeang Hotel in Jalan Sultan, Kuala Lumpur.

Both vehicles were seized by JPJ for further investigations, as revealed in an official statement by the JPJ today (22 October).

They face up to RM50,000 fine, up to 5 years in jail or both if convicted

Those who are found guilty may be charged under Section 205(1) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 (APAD 2010), which provides for a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years or both, if convicted.

Moreover, anyone who abets in the commission of this scam can also be charged under Section 243(1), under the same Act.

Last month, an illegal driver from KLIA Terminal 2 who slapped a Chinese tourist for refusing to pay the fares was arrested and charged in court.

In the incident, the driver initially charged the Chinese tourist for only RM60 from the airport to her hotel, only to be forced to pay a whopping RM836, and was not allowed to leave the car before she paid the amount.

The tourist, however, managed to escape when the hotel employee opened the car door, to which the driver fled.
