The Sirsa Cyber Crime Police have arrested five members of a gang that duped people through fake matrimonial advertisements. The accused were apprehended from Moga district in Punjab.

Cyber Thana officiating in-charge Sub-Inspector Sombir said the case surfaced after a woman from Shah Satnam Pura, Sirsa, lodged a complaint. She said on April 17, she saw a matrimonial advertisement on Facebook and contacted the given WhatsApp number. She added that the fraudster claimed himself to be based in UK and said he will travel to India to meet her.

Later, the woman received a call claiming that the person she was about to meet had been detained by the CBI at the Delhi airport and demanded Rs 33,150 to secure his release. She transferred the money via Google Pay. Soon after, another caller claimed that Income Tax authorities had caught him and demanded another Rs 1,05,000. By the time the woman realised that it was a scam she had lost Rs 1,38,000.
