Five people, including two children, died and three others were injured when a sports bike driven in high speed crashed into a car in this district early on Monday, police said.

The accident occurred at Palakonda crossroads on Mahabubnagar bypass road between 12.30 am and 1 am when the car was taking a right turn and the bike speeding at 160 kmph rammed into the rear left door of the car, they said.

Eight people were travelling in the car and they were returning after attending a birthday function. Six occupants were injured and shifted to a hospital and three among them–a woman and two children–died during treatment, police said.

The bike rider and the pillion rider were declared brought dead to the hospital.

Asked about reports that bike racing could have caused the accident, a senior police official said a group of 15 people from Hyderabad had gone to Mahabubnagar on 13 superbikes to attend a function.

The accident occurred when the group was returning to Hyderabad.

“It was not racing…the bikes were driven at high speed. The other group members fled after the accident," the official said.

A relative of the deceased woman claimed that the group of bikers was engaged in bike race.

Further investigation is on, police said.
