Kota Kinabalu: Five people were killed in separate accidents in Kunak and Kota Belud within 24 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In KUNAK, three people were killed while three others were injured after the vehicle they were travelling in skidded off the road at KM7 of Jalan Kunak-Semporna here, Tuesday evening.
District Police Chief Supt Rejali Angong said the incident occurred at about 6.03pm when the vehicle was travelling from Kalabakan to Kampung Sungai Langgas.
He said the vehicle was driven by a local man and was carrying five passengers, comprising two adults and three children.
“Upon reaching the location, the vehicle was believed to have lost control before skidding off the road,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Rejali advised all road users to exercise caution and consideration while driving to prevent unwanted incidents. The victims who died at the scene were the 39-year-old male driver, a 52-year-old female passenger and an eight-year-old girl.
Kunak Fire and Rescue Department Chief Mohamad Omarbatha, said when firefighters arrived, all the victims, including those killed and injured, were outside the vehicle, with some believed to have been thrown from it.
“The injured victims were taken to Kunak Hospital for further treatment,” he said.
A 16-year-old boy was also killed when the motorcycle he was riding skidded and was subsequently hit by a lorry along Jalan Kota Belud-Kota Marudu (Jalan Jawi-Jawi), Tuesday evening.
District police Chief Supt Khairul Shah Peri said it occurred at about 6.43pm when the 46-year-old local lorry driver was travelling from Kota Marudu towards Tuaran, while the victim and a pillon rider were travelling from Sembirai towards Jalan Kudat.
He said the victim’s motorcycle was believed to have skidded in its lane upon reaching the location amid rainy conditions.
“The pillion rider who was with the victim then got up and moved towards the left road shoulder, while the victim got up before running towards the lorry’s lane.
Due to the close distance, the victim was unable to avoid the lorry and was hit,” he said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the lorry driver and motorcycle pillion rider were uninjured.
The victim’s body was later taken to the Forensic Unit of Kota Belud Hospital for a post-mortem. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Police advised the public to exercise caution when driving, comply with road laws and ensure their vehicles are in good and safe condition.
In KOTA BELUD, a 42-year-old local woman was killed after the Perodua Alza she was driving collided with a lorry along Jalan Kota Belud-Tuaran near Taman Nikmat, Wednesday morning.
Kota Belud District Police Chief Supt Khairul Shah Peri said in the 11.05am accident, the lorry, driven by a 42-year-old local was travelling from Kota Belud towards Tuaran, while the victim was driving from Tuaran towards Kota Belud.
