Four men and one woman from Malaysia were busted at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport after Japanese customs officials uncovered a staggering five kilograms of cocaine, worth an estimated 120 million yen (RM3.1 million). The illicit substance was cleverly hidden in the sneakers worn by all five suspects.

The group had reportedly flown in from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) before their drug smuggling attempt came to an abrupt halt during routine customs checks upon arrival in Japan.

The tell-tale soles that blew their cover

According to a report on YouTube from NTV News, the syndicate’s plan started unraveling when sharp-eyed customs officers at Haneda Airport noticed something suspicious about one of the suspect’s exceptionally thick-soled shoes. Each suspect was found carrying approximately one kilogram of cocaine, evenly split between the left and right insoles of their footwear.

Further physical inspections revealed hidden packages of cocaine stuffed under the insoles of both the left and right shoes, with each suspect carrying roughly one kilogram of the illicit substance. Authorities quickly tracked down the remaining members of the group who had traveled together from KLIA, only to find that all of them were employing the exact same footwear tactic.

Telegram job offer and RM8,000 payoff gone wrong

One of the key suspects, 24-year-old Mohamad Danial Farhan Abdul Rahman, reportedly confessed to investigators after being interrogated. He admitted that he was recruited via Telegram, receiving an offer of RM8,000 to transport the narcotics overseas, complete with the specially provided thick-soled shoes designed to conceal the drugs.

While four of the suspects have admitted to the charges under Japan’s strict Narcotics Control Act, a 25-year-old female suspect has maintained her innocence, claiming she had no idea the packages hidden in her footwear contained illegal substances.

Japanese police are currently working alongside custom authorities to probe deeper into the international drug trafficking network behind the operation.
