At the heart of it is the Number Verification API that differs from the usual SMS OTPs that we’ve all come to know (and sometimes find frustrating), as it allows businesses to verify a customer’s mobile number directly against real-time network data. It’s meant to give users a smoother experience while making it much harder for scammers to slip through. Essentially, it’s a more secure and seamless way of proving “you are who you say you are” when logging in or transacting online.

Announced at the Digital Nation Summit in Kuala Lumpur, they are expecting banks and e-commerce leaders to take advantage of this technology, while eventually streamlining it for access by other businesses and use cases, too.

According to spokespersons at the announcement, they have already tested the API through projects like Mobile Identity and cross-border fraud prevention with Thailand and Singapore, and realized the potential in providing safer digital spaces and stronger customer experiences, as well as building a trusted and sovereign solution for Malaysians.
