Have you ever been to Melaka before? It is one of the most culture-rich cities to visit (with great food) as it was awarded UNESCO world heritage city in 2008.

If you've never visited Melaka, I highly recommend you do so on a weekend to get the best experience doing touristy things.

Here are 5 top things to do in Melaka City:

1. Visit Dutch Square (Red Square)

Dutch Square, also known as Red Square is the place to be if you're interested in learning the history of Melaka when it was colonised by the Portuguese, Dutch and British. There are many historical sites to explore plus museums to visit.

Top historical sites to visit:

  • Christ Church
  • St. Paul's Hill
  • A'Famosa Fort

2. Take Photos At Street Arts

There are many beautiful and creative street arts to explore in Melaka. They're all located nearby Jonker Street and Red Square. Since you're already in the area, it would be a waste to not stop by and take some photos.

One of the most popular street arts in Melaka would be Kiehl's Mural.

3. Enjoy Local Food Along Jonker Walk

Jonker Walk, also known as Jonker Street is well-known for its local street food and souvenirs for sale. The street is very long - I would recommend bringing an umbrella, water bottle, portable fan and wear proper walking shoes so you don't get exhausted.

Best street food to try along Jonker Street:

  • Curry Fish balls
  • Twister/Spiral potato
  • Coconut Lemon Juice
  • Chinese biscuits (chicken, pork, kaya, etc)
  • Portuguese Egg Tart
  • Pineapple Jam Tarts
  • Quail Eggs

These are the street food that is famous in Melaka and you should try a couple of them to get first-hand experience of eating like a local in the city.

4. Go On A River Cruise

A popular activity to do in the evenings or nights - the Melaka River Cruise. It's right at the entrance of Jonker Street, pretty hard to miss.

Going in the evening might be fun as it won't be so hot! However, going at night under the moonlight can be a pretty calming experience too.

Besides, right along the Melaka river, there are a few bars. If you're looking to explore the nightlife in Melaka, I highly recommend chilling at one of the bars facing the river at night. It is a very pretty view, a view I'll not forget!

One of my favourite things to do - cafe hopping! Just like Penang, Melaka has a bunch of aesthetic and Instagrammable cafes with delicious food. Not forgetting, great western and local coffee.

  • The Daily Fix
  • Heesan Kopi
  • Calanthe Art Cafe
  • Geographer Cafe

Most of these cafes are along Jonker Street - perfect for a coffee break or quick dinner before you continue exploring the long street.

There you have it, 5 must-do things in Melaka! I hope you'll try them out. I had a great time exploring the city with friends.
