LKIM says the 50-litre daily diesel subsidy at RM1.65 meets most fishermen’s current operational needs, with additional costs to be borne by individuals.

IPOH: The maximum 50-litre daily subsidised diesel quota is currently sufficient for most fishermen’s operational needs.

Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil acknowledged complaints from some fishermen who find the quota inadequate.

He clarified that the subsidy is not meant to cover full operational costs for each fishing trip. The government assistance only helps cover part of the expenses based on boat capacity and individual fuel requirements.

“If any fishermen require more than 50 litres a day, they will have to bear the additional cost themselves,” he said. Muhammad Faiz stated this policy is designed to cover only a portion of overall costs.

He spoke at a press conference after officiating an LKIM cheap fish sale event. Regarding market supply, he confirmed the country’s fish catch is currently sufficient to meet domestic demand.

Any fish price increases are more likely due to supply chain factors like logistics rather than shortages at the fishermen’s level. He emphasised the government provides various other incentives to fishermen beyond diesel subsidies.

These include monthly cost-of-living allowances and catch incentives to encourage higher productivity. Such efforts ensure fishermen continue their operations while maintaining stable national fish supply.
