Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Electricity is targeting the planting of 500 mangrove saplings in Kampung Seri Serbang, Bongawan, as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts to protect coastal ecosystems and firefly habitats.
Its chairman Datuk Saadiah Aziz said the Cahaya Serbang CSR project, carried out in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), reflected the company’s commitment to environmental conservation alongside its role in supporting Sabah’s development.
She said the initiative involved cooperation with UMS’ Faculty of Tropical Forestry and the local community to promote environmental awareness and shared responsibility for protecting the area.
Mangrove ecosystems provide habitats and breeding grounds for various species, help stabilise coastal areas and support biodiversity, including fireflies that are among the area’s natural attractions.
Sabah Electricity had also contributed RM50,000 to an elephant food corridor project in the Maliau Basin in 2022 and another RM50,000 for degraded forest rehabilitation in Ulu Kukut, Kota Belud, in 2024, before conducting a mangrove planting programme at Darau Wetland, Menggatal, in 2025.
