A retiree reportedly spent his RM700,000 EPF savings within 21 days on home renovations, a car and a wedding, reigniting debate on retirement planning.
A local man’s decision to spend his Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings in less than a month has shocked netizens, with many lamenting how such a substantial sum could disappear in such a short period.
According to a viral post on Threads, the 55-year-old had accumulated RM700,000 in his EPF account, only for the entire amount to be depleted within 21 days.
“It is one of the fastest cases of an EPF payout being depleted,” the post read.
The post claimed that the retiree spent the money on renovating his home, buying a car outright and funding his child’s wedding.
With his retirement savings now exhausted, he is reportedly working as a security guard at a supermarket to make ends meet.
While the story served as a cautionary tale about the importance of managing retirement savings wisely, many netizens questioned how such a large amount could have been spent so quickly, even on major expenses.
Others, however, defended the retiree’s choices, arguing that life’s unpredictability can sometimes lead people to make decisions that may appear questionable in hindsight.
“The reality is this: RM700,000 may seem like a huge amount, but in reality it can only last about five to 10 years. Spending it all within 21 days, however, is exceptionally fast. Financial planning is a lifelong responsibility. Retirement does not mean you can stop planning your finances,” one user commented.
