57 Mat Rempits Hiding in Palm Oil Plantation Surrenders to Kulai PDRM for Fear of Missing Out On Hari Raya

57 illegal street racers or ‘mat rempit’ in Kulai, Johor finally surrendered to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) during Hari Raya Aidilfitri yesterday (22 April 2023) after hiding in a palm oil plantation.

According to the Kulai District Police, the mat rempits, all of them are men aged between 17 to 42 had been hiding in the plantation at Kilometre 7 at Jalan Kulai-Kota Tinggi since 3am yesterday.

During an operation since the eve of Aidilfitri, most of these mat rempits ran away from PDRM and hid in the plantation. Moreover, they tried to escape through ‘rat routes’ but the Kulai Police managed to surround the area, preventing them to do so.

Kulai District Police Chief Supt Tok Beng Yeow confirmed that two officers and 13 personnel from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division were involved in the Special Operation, which itself was part of Op Selamat 20.

The Kulai District Police then revealed that at 9am yesterday, all of the mat rempit came out and surrendered one by one.

Some told the police that they were hungry and missed the Aidilfitri delicacies, while others said that they couldn’t stand the hot conditions in the plantations.

Tok Beng Yeow said that 140 summonses were issued for various offences to these mat rempits, including driving without a license and insurance, expired licence, non-standard plat numbers, modified exhaust and not wearing a helmet. Moreover, 38 motorcycles were also confiscated under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
