Festive celebrations often bring an abundance of delicious food, and for many, overindulging is part of the tradition. However, for one woman in Jiangsu, China, excessive eating during Chinese New Year nearly cost her life when her stomach became dangerously bloated, leading to multiple organ complications.

According to China Press, a 41-year-old woman, identified only by her surname Zhang, had a long-standing habit of binge eating. The festive season only worsened this tendency, as she continued consuming large amounts of food despite experiencing severe bloating and discomfort.

Initially dismissing her symptoms as temporary, Zhang carried on with her usual eating patterns. However, two weeks later, her condition deteriorated significantly. She began vomiting frequently and experiencing intense abdominal pain. The situation became more critical after she consumed persimmons, which exacerbated her digestive issues.

Realizing the severity of her symptoms, Zhang was rushed to the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University. By the time she arrived, her condition had worsened so much that she slipped into a coma and was immediately placed in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Doctors diagnosed Zhang with extreme gastric distension, a condition where the stomach swells due to obstruction in the small intestine. The prolonged blockage had led to necrosis (tissue death) of the gastric wall and multiple perforations in her stomach. With her life at risk, surgeons had to perform an urgent gastrectomy and esophagojejunostomy, procedures that involved removing part of her stomach and reconstructing her digestive tract.

During the surgery, medical staff extracted over 3,000 milliliters of undigested food from her stomach, weighing a staggering 5 kilograms. The contents primarily consisted of pickled vegetables and bean sprouts. Additionally, doctors discovered several large gastric bezoars—hardened masses of indigestible material—measuring around 6 centimeters in size.

Following the life-saving procedure, the hospital’s deputy director issued a public warning about the dangers of excessive eating, particularly during festive seasons. He urged people to maintain balanced meals, limit their intake of salt and oily foods, and drink alcohol in moderation. He also emphasized the importance of avoiding excessive consumption of persimmons, pickled vegetables, and bean sprouts, especially on an empty stomach or for consecutive days, as these foods are rich in fiber and can be difficult to digest.

The warning was particularly directed at elderly individuals, those with preexisting digestive conditions, and people who have undergone abdominal surgery, as they are at a higher risk of severe complications.

Zhang’s case serves as a sobering reminder that overeating can lead to serious, life-threatening health issues. While festive feasting is an integral part of celebrations, moderation and mindful eating are crucial to preventing such medical emergencies.
