6.6-magnitude earthquake rattles Java island

JAKARTA – A strong earthquake with 6.6 magnitude has struck Indonesia’s Java island today, according to the country’s geophysics agency BMKG.

It struck at a depth of 632km about 68km northwest of Tuban in East Java province.

There was no risk of a tsunami reported.

The quake occurred at 4.55pm local time and was felt in neighbouring areas – namely Surabaya, Denpasar, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Sukabumi, and as far as Jakarta.

Another 5.5 magnitude earthquake also shook Bangkalan in East Java at 5.37pm, causing residents to panic and flee from their houses.

There has been no immediate report on casualties so far, and authorities are collecting information on property damage. – Bernama, April 14, 2023
