Acting Northeast police chief Superintendent V. Saravanan said in a press conference held at the crime scene that the victim was identified as Teh Teik Chye (transliteration), who worked as an economy rice seller.

Preliminary investigations found that the victim was attacked by the suspect after he returned home and was about to take the elevator back to his own house. He was stabbed a total of 27 times in the neck and abdomen.

“Residents in the area had previously noticed suspicious individuals lingering around the elevator, raising concerns about their activities,” he said as quoted by China Press.

Saravanan said residents later found Teh lying on the ground with severe injuries and immediately called for assistance, where the ambulance arrived at 6.50pm.

Teh was rushed to the Penang Hospital for treatment but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

Saravanan added that preliminary investigations found there were two suspects involved in the incident and rode a motorcycle, where one carried out the attack while the other kept a lookout for the police.

The murder weapon is believed to be a short knife as its sheath was discovered at the scene but police have yet to recover the actual weapon.

Had 11 criminal records

China Press also reported that Teh had a long rap sheet, where he had a total of 11 criminal records.

While police are still probing what was the motive for the attack, they have ruled out robbery as Teh’s belongings were still with him.
