The lights at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun in Ipoh turned green as a tribute to a 64-year-old patient whose final act of kindness helped give others hope.
After his passing, the man’s family agreed to donate his kidney and eye tissue, allowing his legacy to continue through organ donation.
Organ retrieval took over 6 hours
The organ and tissue retrieval procedure was carried out on 25 August, taking more than six hours to complete. The kidney retrieval surgery alone took nearly four hours, followed by the collection of eye tissue.
According to the hospital’s Facebook post, the patient had been receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
After medical teams from the Emergency and Trauma Department and Neurosurgery Department explained the organ donation process to the family, they made the decision to proceed after fully understanding the procedure.
Family’s decision brings hope to others
To honour the donor and his family’s generosity, HRPB Ipoh was illuminated in green, a symbol of life, hope and respect for organ donors.
The hospital also expressed its gratitude to the family for making such a meaningful decision despite the pain of losing a loved one.
“Amid the grief of losing someone close, the family chose to give other patients a chance to continue living. This decision gives another meaning to their loss and brings hope to those waiting,” the hospital said.
The procedure was supported by the hospital’s Organ Donation Coordination Unit, National Transplant Resource Centre, Selayang Hospital’s Urology Department, Kuala Lumpur Hospital and Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar.
