Reading boss Jose Gomes insists there's no plans to cut short the loan of Everton goalkeeper Joao Virginia.

After starting the Royals' first two matches of the season, Virginia lost his place in the starting line-up to fellow new arrival Rafael Cabral.

It was expected the Portuguese youth international would return for Reading's Carabao Cup clash with Plymouth Argyle, but instead third-choice Sam Walker was given the nod.

Gomes told BerkshireLive: "I think Sam Walker deserved to play and it was a good game to let him play 90 minutes on Tuesday.

"Joao Virginia has been working very, very well and he has been improving day by day. If we need him, we can count with him.

"He is our player so I don't think this can happen (end his loan).

"I think we are stronger with him than if we let him go."
