Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has dismissed Scottish criticism of Liverpool fullback Andrew Robertson.
Robertson captained the Tartan Army to a 6-0 victory over San Marino on Sunday as they ended a disappointing run of four successive defeats that had ended their hopes of automatic qualification for Euro 2020.
It's an amazing story (winning the Champions League). He's made an amazing leap from Dundee United to Hull to Liverpool," Big Eck told the Liverpool Echo.
"It's outstanding. He's definitely an inspiration for young players that want to be Scottish footballers.
Andy is a guy who should inspire every young Scottish footballer to want to play football and reach the top because he's been rejected a couple of times and never given up.
You see a lot of kids now who are told they won't make it at a certain age who give up but Andy Robertson is the epitome of never, ever giving up."
McLeish continued: I think it was a no-brainer to get him in as captain. He has Virgil van Dijk behind him (at Liverpool) so he can charge upfield quite a lot.
Maybe in the Scotland team he might not be quite able to do that as often as he could being a Liverpool player.
"But that's part of Andy's learning and I think he can cope with that extremely well.
He's a strong character. He's going to make mistakes now and again, he's not perfect. You don't have all the answers.
We've seen even the supreme, big centre-half alongside him, a couple times that even Virgil is human. Robertson's allowed to be human."
