Sweet, small, and vibrantly colourful, kuih is a beloved traditional Malaysian dessert, that’s best paired with tea and enjoyed as a light afternoon snack. Although many regions in Malaysia are proud of their own kuih, the state of Malacca stands out. This is mainly because of its long tradition of nyonya kuih, passed down by the Baba Nyonya (Peranakan) community. Fortunately, you do not need to travel far to try these treats. Many places in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, for example, offer them fresh every day. Here’s where to find the best Nyonya kuih in KL and PJ.

The word kuih refers to many kinds of Malaysian bite-sized desserts and snacks. For instance, some of the most popular include kuih lapis with its colourful layers, soft onde-onde filled with palm sugar, and the golden, savoury curry puff.

Additionally, the Baba Nyonya community has its own special kuih. These include kuih pai tee (crispy top hats), kuih kapit (also called love letters), and ang ku kueh, a red rice cake filled with sweet mung bean paste. In the same way, each kuih tells a story of tradition and care.

The wide variety of kuih shows Malaysia’s rich mix of cultures. Baba Nyonya food, for example, blends Chinese and Malay cooking. It grew over centuries of shared history, dating back to the 14th to 17th centuries, and these recipes have been kept alive by each new generation.

If you’re craving Malaysia’s most iconic sweets, you’re in luck. Here are our top picks for the best nyonya kuih you can find in KL and PJ.
