A 72-year-old housewife from Penang is starting the Year of the Dragon as a brand-new multimillionaire after winning more than RM40 million from the Sports Toto Lotto 6/58 draw on Jan 28.

What makes the story even more wholesome is that she didn’t spend hours analysing numbers or following “winning formulas” she simply went with the computer-generated Lucky Pick option, hoping to try her luck.

Been buying Toto since the 1980s

According to Oriental Daily,  the winner said she has been a long-time Toto player and has been buying numbers since the 1980s.

On draw days, she would usually stop by a Toto outlet while running errands for daily necessities.

On that particular day, she noticed that the jackpot had snowballed to RM40 million, which prompted her to buy a System 10 ticket using the Lucky Pick option, purely for entertainment.

She never expected it to change her life overnight.

Checked ticket in the middle of the night

The winner recalled that she was restless on the night of the draw and couldn’t fall asleep. Eventually, she got up in the early hours of the morning and decided to check her ticket.

As she matched the numbers one by one – 19, 29, 32, 39, 40 and 54 – reality slowly sank in.

She had hit the jackpot.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when all the numbers matched,” she said. “I was so excited that I couldn’t sleep the entire night. But I’m very grateful, and I still plan to live a simple life.”

Won more with System 10

Because she purchased a System 10 ticket, she didn’t just win the jackpot prize of RM40,120,690.20.

She also picked up additional winnings from other prize categories, bringing her total extra earnings to RM173,152.

Not bad for a ticket bought on a whim.

No big splurging plans

The lucky winner later travelled from Penang to Kuala Lumpur with her husband to collect the prize.

Despite the massive windfall, the couple said they do not have any extravagant plans.

Instead, they intend to manage the money carefully.

Her husband shared that receiving such a huge sum just before Chinese New Year felt like a massive blessing.

We see this as a big angpow,” he said. “My wife only played for fun, and we don’t plan to spend recklessly. We’ll share some with our family, while the rest will go into savings and fixed deposits to secure our future.”
