Sarvodaya Hospital, Faridabad, has achieved a remarkable neonatal care milestone with the successful discharge of an extremely low birth weight baby girl, born at just 730 grams, after a 66-day NICU battle.
The infant, who overcame multiple life-threatening complications through advanced neonatal care, multidisciplinary expertise and round-the-clock monitoring, is now thriving at 1.83 kg.
The baby was discharged in a stable condition, marking a true triumph of medical excellence, resilience and teamwork.
Born as an extremely preterm infant, the baby faced severe early challenges, including 22 days of feed intolerance and suspected necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).
Under the expert supervision of Dr. Sushil Singla, Director – Pediatrics, the NICU team followed advanced neonatal protocols and ensured meticulous monitoring throughout her critical journey.
Dr. Shweta Kumari Sharma (Senior Consultant –Pediatric surgery) played a pivotal role in managing the suspected NEC and navigating a particularly difficult 10-day period marked by challenging IV access. Through precise clinical management, the baby was gradually stabilized and successfully achieved full feeds by Day 28.
The most critical phase occurred on Day 51, when the baby developed meningitis, along with episodes of apnea and bradycardia, requiring immediate CPR and mechanical ventilation.
Dr. Anand Narayanan and Dr. Rashmie Prabha, Pediatric Consultants, led the intensive care management during this life-threatening phase.
With timely intervention, including ventilatory support, inotropes, and careful handling of post-meningitic complications, the team was able to stabilize the infant and gradually wean her to room air and oral feeds.
“Managing an extremely low birth weight baby with such complex complications requires not just advanced technology, but constant vigilance and teamwork.
This case reflects the strength of our NICU protocols and the dedication of our entire team,” said Dr. Sushil Singla, Director – Pediatrics.
Reflecting on the journey, Dr. Shweta added, “Every stage of this baby’s care required careful decision-making and persistence. Successfully navigating the NEC risk was a crucial step in her recovery.”
Dr. Anand shared, “The turning point on Day 51 was extremely challenging. Timely intervention and coordinated teamwork helped us bring her back from a critical state.”
Adding to this, Dr. Rakesh Gupta (Chairman Sarvodaya Healthcare) said, “Saving the life of such a tiny and critically ill new-born is a reflection of our team’s clinical excellence and commitment to compassionate care.”
Now discharged, the baby is hemodynamically stable, on full oral feeds, and breathing independently.
