A touching display of dedication reminded us all of the power of civic duty during the Ayer Kuning by-election.
Despite his age, 75-year-old Raman Pachaiappan wasn’t going to let anything stop him from voting.
As early as 7.15am, the former estate worker arrived at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Ayer Kuning – on foot, no less – determined to cast his vote.
I left my house early and chose to walk so I could reach the polling centre in time,” he said when approached outside the school this morning (Apr 26).
While beating the crowd was certainly a bonus – “Arriving early means I don’t have to queue for too long,” he shared.
According to Buletin TV3, Raman revealed that voting had always been a non-negotiable part of his life.
I’ve never missed voting in any general election, so of course I wanted to vote in this by-election too,”
The Ayer Kuning by-election saw a three-way battle between Barisan Nasional’s Mohamad Yusri Bakir, Perikatan Nasional’s Abd Muhaimin Malek and Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s Bawani KS.
Whether rain or shine, Raman’s actions serve as a reminder that democracy lives through the people – and sometimes, it walks 2KM just to show up.
