77-year-old retiree graduates in law at UiTM, becomes internet sensation

Kota Kinabalu: A 77-year-old recently received his bachelor of laws in a remarkable moment during the 99th convocation ceremony of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

UiTM's TikTok footage of Zulkifly Abdullah going onstage to receive his scroll has since gone viral with over 72,300 likes and 701 comments, garnering widespread admiration for his determination and spirit .

The video shows him proudly dressed in traditional academic regalia, confidently walking across the stage to receive his scroll, a moment that has since been celebrated by thousands.

"We young people study because we want to have a career, but the veterans study maybe to achieve their dreams and sharpen their minds… salute,” commented netizen @naaaaliiy.

Read more According to KitaReporters, Zulkifly previously served as the Director-General of the Department of Labour Affairs in the Ministry of Human Resources from 2001 to 2003.

“Since I had worked with the Ministry of Human Resources for approximately 34 years, I was heavily involved in labour laws.

“That is what inspired me to pursue this bachelor’s degree in law,” he said to the news outlet.

Zulkifly said his passion for reading aligned with his legal work.

Not only did he find personal fulfilment in this achievement, but he also had familial support, with his son, also a graduate in law, assisting him throughout his studies.

He advised the younger generation to keep learning as long as there are ways and opportunities to seek more knowledge to become successful.
