77-year-old woman killed in fire at Bintulu squatter colony

A SENIOR citizen was killed in a fire while 92 other squatters escaped unhurt when fire swept through a squatter colony today in Bintulu in northern Sarawak.

The incident along Jalan Sungai Plan, Tanjung Kidurong in Bintulu, Sarawak occurred around noon, with at least 16 makeshift houses razed.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said at about 2pm just a charred body was discovered among the homes that had been destroyed.

Fire and rescue teams rushed to the site after receiving a distress call and found that the fire had already spread through the cluster of wooden houses, said the department in a statement.

The deceased was identified as a woman named Nuie anak Ipang, aged 77.

"The 92 survivors include 67 adults and 25 children.

"Fire teams are still trying to douse the fire and 16 houses have been totally destroyed," the department said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated. – April 7, 2025
