Kota Kinabalu: About 8,000 anime, comics and games (ACG) fans are expected to converge in Borneo Matsuri, the first anime, comics and games (ACG) music festival in Borneo, to be held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), here, from Oct 21-22.
Local community radio station KupiKupi FM organises the two-day festival as part of its efforts to diversify its reach, said the station’s General Manager Lester Calvin Miol.
“The event promises to immerse our attendees in the world of ACG music, offering an unforgettable experience for anime enthusiasts and music lovers alike,” he told a press conference, here, Thursday.
Borneo Matsuri, he said, aims to celebrate the vibrant Japanese ACG culture and its remarkable impact on fans across the globe, especially in Borneo.

“Once a niche community, the ACG scene in Borneo has blossomed into a subculture that deserves recognition for its artistic and creative talents, especially among the local youth.
“As a response to this, KupiKupi FM created Borneo Matsuri to be the platform that catapults these young talents into the spotlight, providing them with a chance to showcase their skills, from breath-taking cosplay to mesmerising performances.”
Borneo Matsuri, he added, is more than just a gathering of ACG fans.
“It is a pathway for the youth to develop their interests and passions into something extraordinary.
“The ACG community is an understated culture, yet you see it bloom from a tiny seed to become an internationally recognised force to be reckoned with.
“Borneo Matsuri is honoured to be part of this growing community, as this unique festival promises to be a fun-filled day for youths and families alike to bond,” he said.
He also said in the spirit of giving back to the community, Borneo Matsuri is extending its warm invitation to local orphanages.
“We believe in the power of entertainment to bring joy and create lasting memories by inviting orphanages to participate in Borneo Matsuri.
“We aim to provide new and exciting entertainment experiences to those who truly need it.
“We sincerely hope this gesture will brighten their day and inspire them to embrace creativity and passion.”
As a collaboration between KupiKupi FM and event organisers Projek Hikayat and Hobbycon, Lester said Borneo Matsuri is set to redefine the ACG festival scene in Borneo.
“The festival’s programme boasts a dynamic line-up of guests and activities, including live performances by local artists, cosplay showcases, merchandise booths, panel discussions, interactive workshops, and much more,” he said.
The line-up includes Rina Hime, Arddley Nicholas, Gretchene, Eu4nics, Ordin J, Tuni Sundatang, Whooguan, Zen Oasis, Iccachu, Naomi Yuma, Nakoudays, Zorokit, Amelia Khor, Ai Nurul and Pudds, and Zeetingdraws, among others.
“The line-up is strong enough to attract a crowd, not only from the music side but also the ACG segment.”
Lester said it is timely for KupiKupi FM to venture into something fresh.
“For several years, we are known for our concerts, but after the pandemic, we found that the market has slightly shifted.
“Our followers expect KupiKupi to be more than a concert entity. However, I would not say that we stop hosting concerts, but we are only putting a rest to it,” he said.
He also said Borneo Matsuri is expected to attract attendees from all across the region, including avid anime fans, cosplayers, music enthusiasts, and curious individuals eager to explore the world of ACG.
“The festival also offers an excellent opportunity for local businesses and sponsors to showcase their products and services to a diverse and passionate audience.”
