The Oakywood and Swyft stood out as two that I wouldn’t mind in any room of my house, and once again, the finish and design of the Oakywood classic desk, with its focus on pure simplicity and natural materials, really stood out.
However, that simplicity won’t be for everyone, and at the other end of the scale, I looked at two flat pack options. These did admittedly take a while to construct, but with a mix of wood and metal gave a really nice effect, perfect for any home office, with one featuring a small built-in cupboard and the other a set of drawers.
Then I delved into the more corporate world and looked at some of the dedicated professional options: simple, strong, and, considering the price, perfect for one-off units or for furnishing an entire office.
All but one of the desks on test are a permanent fixture; however, for good measure, I’ve also included a folding desk. This is one that you can have out for work in a spare room when you need it, and then fold away when you don’t, returning your room to a living, rather than work, space.

Swyft’s desk 01 is the best desk I tested thanks to its excellent design and superb wood quality used on the work surface. In use, I loved the size of the desk; it felt compact, and in the office, it was far from dominating, looking elegant in the corner. Sure enough, sat with the laptop, the quality of the desk surface was apparent, but again, despite a slightly squarer edge to the work surface, the design made it comfortable to work with.
Arriving in a single box, the assembly instructions were beautifully laid out and easy to follow. Essentially, bolt the legs in place and flip it over upright. Due to the quality of the materials, the desk is heavy, and, as it has cupboard sections, an extra pair of hands is useful when flipping it upright. Since the small cubbyholes are covered by wooden doors, it’s worth using masking tape to keep them closed when moving. The veneer for the work surface is high-quality, but you do need to be careful when moving it, as it doesn’t have the same durability as solid wood.
Once in position, the mix of solid oak and a veneered top gives it a more traditional writing-desk style. Sure enough, as I went to place my overly large 27in monitor onto the table, I found that the base overhung the ledge section, so I had to drop it to the main work surface, where it dominated.
In the end, I decided that this is more of a writing-desk style, and that using my laptop directly for the week was the best option rather than plugging it into the monitor. During the test, I tried a smaller monitor with a more compact base, and it did fit, but to be honest, I preferred the writing desk style, especially the storage space and cup holders, which reinforced that traditional look and feel.
Over a week of us, the built-in storage and features for keeping cables tidy really stood out to me were . I found that with a standard monitor on the top surface, the wires could be fed through the purpose-made hole to the laptop, mouse and keyboard, and it keeps things very neat. Plus the two storage options on either side of where I had positioned the monitor were handy for stashing a variety of items. The large slide drawer at the front of the desk, which, while shallow, is also ideal for notepads, pens and more.
If you like the look and style of a more traditional writing desk, brought bang up to date, then the Swyft desk 01 makes a great option. Known for flat pack, the Ikea fjällbo desk arrives neatly packed and clearly labelled. As the cheapest desk I tested, there is a little more construction than most of the others, and takes a good hour or two to assemble. However, the build itself is surprisingly straightforward once everything is neatly aligned, with the most concentration going into positioning the work surface frame over the underside of the desktop and bolting it into place.
There are essentially no guiding holes, but as the surface is exactly the same size as the frame, you just need to ensure that the edges are all aligned before securing the screws. Once that’s in place, you can drop the work surface onto the frame. This really requires two people: one to lift and position, and one to steady whilst the other ensures alignment, before pushing everything home and securing.
With everything screwed into place, the desk's look and style are surprisingly effective, and the small triangular braces in every corner secure everything tightly. Considering the price of the desk, it actually feels extremely robust.
This is also one of the only desks that comes with its own table tidy system, essentially small pads that fit to the frameworks so you can feed and secure the cables. It’s simple but effective. The Ikea desk also features storage, with a large below-the-surface cupboard to the right. This consists of two shelves, with the wire-mesh wall giving it an industrial look. Again, this has all been well designed, and with the door to the cupboard secured in place by a small magnetic clasp, it all finishes off the look and use very nicely.
This is very much a desk designed for the home and will suit any room you're looking to use as an office, especially if you’re seeking an industrial look. It’s also relatively compact and, with its own storage area, you can keep your working life neatly contained.

The classic desk by Oakywood is by far the heaviest desk in this test, but it’s also one of the easiest to assemble. From laying out the two boxes to unpacking and starting the assembly, the whole process took a little over twenty minutes.
The instruction sheet is just a single one-sided page, as that’s really all that’s needed. Each angled leg is inserted into the recessed hole and bolted in place with four screws. The table can then be flipped over into the final position. That flip may require an extra pair of hands, but as the construction is solid, it’s actually easy enough to manoeuvre.
Upright and in position, the work surface feels spacious even with the monitor, computer and a few other work items laid out. What instantly struck me about the table was how comfortable it is to sit at and use, with the rounded edges of the oak work surface feeling far more comfortable than any of the others on test. The other standout feature was the rigidity; it’s an incredibly solid desk.
The 140cm length of the desk, I felt, was the sweet spot when it comes to working areas. If you’re using a laptop connected to a monitor, then this width is ideal, although I would go for the 80cm rather than the 70cm so you can push the monitor back a touch. I just draped the cables over the back, although if you like things neat, there is a good range of accessories available, from cable tidies to headphone holders.
The natural oak finish looks great, and whether in the home or the office, it looks ultra-stylish and has proved to be ultra-durable. However, as this is a natural wood finish, it will require annual maintenance to keep it looking fresh.
While this was one of the first desks to arrive in the office, it was also one of two I kept coming back to for its simple style, solid construction, and comfort. This desk is expensive, but if you like the natural look and want one of the best working surfaces available, this would be my recommendation.

If you’re looking for a desk for work, projects, sewing, and modelling, Herman Miller’s OE1 project table is perfectly suited. There are countless other desks that mimic the design style and functionality of the OE1, but what sets this apart is the quality of the materials and build.
The OE1 arrives in three parts with two boxes and a stiffener that’s wrapped individually. What’s instantly apparent when unboxing is that the quality is on another level. The table-to-leg bracket feels like it's made of cast metal, and as you bolt the bracket to the metal legs, there's decent weight and rigidity.
The leg bracket fixings offer multiple holes for the screws to tighten into the underside of the desk top, and there are handily two guide holes for each leg, enabling you to accurately position them. During testing I opted for the fixed-position legs, but you can get rollers for the base of the legs if you need to wheel it around the workshop, studio, or office, which I wish I had done.
There’s a stiffener that bolts to the underside of the table, providing additional support along the tabletop's length. I use a very similar set of tables from another manufacturer, and each has sagged over the year. If you are looking to support heavier machinery on top of these tables or a large, heavy monitor, this stiffener will help prolong the table’s lifespan.
Over the weeks, the simple design certainly appealed, although I found that this was a table I preferred to stand looking down at, with whatever project I’m working on laid out and ready. The seat with a monitor and desk was all a little clinical, and while comfortable, didn’t have the ergonomic feel that some of the softer material options gave.
This is a desk that lends itself to flexibility, from a large work surface throughout the day to a hobby table in the evenings, ideally suited for crafts, modelling, sewing, and, for me at present, a cutting mount board. The desk offers a high-quality build that few other manufacturers can offer, so while expensive, this is the table that has inspired plenty of other designs.

Looking for the Scandi look for your office? Then this is, without a doubt, the desk you want. The Hay Copenhague 90 Desk is from an iconic designer, and when the single box arrived, opening revealed a simple layout with the two leg sections, a wooden stiffener and the work surface.
The assembly instructions were simple yet straightforward, and within 20 minutes, the desk was up and ready to use. The design features a counter-lever desk with legs angled towards the back, providing ample leg clearance and making it appear to take up less space than it does.
The quality of the workmanship was apparent in the high quality finish of the surface and wooden legs. Of all the plain desktop surfaces in the test, the feel and texture here were unique. When it came to durability, despite some pretty hefty equipment being used on the surface, it cleaned up well without any marks or scratches.
When testing this desk, I had a busy week of video editing ahead, but with the monitor, laptop, and desktop machine underneath it, everything fit well. While I prefer a more rounded edge on my work surfaces, the finish and quality were comfortable, and, throughout the week, this style of surface worked well for me.
While I’ve found I prefer the natural wood as a work surface, the finish on this definitely lends itself to focused work. As I finished editing the video, I moved on to selecting a few prints I’d developed in the darkroom over the last couple of weeks. Here, the clean surface of the desk and solid nature made it ideal for sifting through images and making notes, before heading back to the darkroom.

The first of the flat-pack options, Habitat’s Nomad desk, arrived in two mid-weight boxes: one with the parts and the other with the desktop surface, and a few more parts. The first thing I noted, compared with the more premium models, was the length of the instructions; the details were spread over several pages rather than on a single sheet.
As I started to unpack, there were a variety of parts bags with different screw and fixings. They were handily all illustrated at true size, so you could hold up the screw to the image to check it’s the correct one. As I’d opened all packages, left the build after 30 minutes, and returned two days later to finish, this visual guide proved invaluable.
Assembly was relatively straightforward, with the metal and wood sections bolting together to the point where the large black work surface could be laid on top and screwed in place. Securing the work surfaces increases the desk's rigidity, and the finished results actually looked pretty good.
It’s obvious that the work surface is veneer rather than wood, but the overall quality, once built, is exceptionally good. For a mid-range desk, the attention to detail in the metal handles and smooth-sliding drawers comes together to create a stylish effect. The blend of metal and wood works well, and the desk's size and built-in storage make it a great home office option.
One of the features that I really liked was the desk drawers, and while I love the openness of the majority of other desks on test, there’s no getting away from how useful desk drawers are. These drawers are a decent size, and with the top slot cubbyhole, which offers a little shelf space, the overall feel is very well balanced. There's something quite serious about the desk, and while the work surface space isn’t overly large, it’s perfectly suitable for working at a laptop or having a small monitor in place.

The scale of the work surface on AJ Products desk QBUS eclipsed all others in this test. Nonetheless the size and simplicity were exactly what I wanted, a solid work surface for testing and actually doing all the more practical work that my job entails.
The price and size of this desk instantly stood out, as did its simplicity. Sure enough, arriving in two boxes, the construction process didn’t take long. The instructions that arrive with the table are minimal, essentially outlining the steps for constructing the frame before bolting the desk surface into place. There’s little room for going wrong, with the build taking around 20 minutes.
Once in position, it forms a robust working surface, and one that proved handy for a range of work. One of the major benefits are the O-frame legs; these are square-frame sections that form the table's main structure, connected by two metal lengths for rigidity. Once the table surface is placed on top and everything is bolted together, it forms a very strong, if simple, table.
This desk is an ideal option if you need a work surface that can support significant weight. In testing it provided plenty of space for my monitor, laptop, and a 3D printer. Because the surface has one of the rigidity bars underneath, it helps stiffen the underside of the desktop, so even with a large monitor and 3D printer, it still felt solid. If I was kitting out a techy office this would be my first choice.

The AJ Products Claire office folding table is a desk with a difference, and it arrived in a relatively lightweight and compact box. It’s one of the smaller desks on test and certainly the most compact. When I took the table out of the box, I looked for the construction instructions but found none. The desk arrives folded and essentially ready to go, aside from one small bit of construction.
That one small construction task is to screw in the second set of feet that enable you to level the table. Once done, you swing out the two leg sections (much like a trellis table), make sure the link is locked, and it’s ready to go.
Considering that this is a folding table, it still feels stable. In its corner position in my office, it looks rather small compared with the desks that have dominated the space for the last few weeks. However, at 120cm in length and just 60cm in depth, this is the best desk for smaller homes, especially if one of your bedrooms doubles as an office.
The desk takes all of 30 seconds to unfold and another 30 to pack down, at which point it quite easily slides under a bed to store away when not needed.
Though the rigidity doesn’t match the robustness of the constructed desks, it’s still more than decent, and I was surprised by the quality of the chrome legs and laminate top, considering the relatively low price.
If space is tight and you need a decent desk, but don’t have room to sacrifice a permanent area, this is would be my go to.

What are the best desks?
After weeks of testing, the best desk I tested was the Swyft desk 01, thanks to its excellent storage, superb quality of materials and large front-loading drawer (that I would inevitably fill with stuff I don’t need). Another desk that I kept coming back to was the Oakywood classic desk. This is a good solid standard desk and provided plenty of space for my office chair to slide under, plus its working edge made it comfortable to type at.
I was also taken with the Herman Miller OE1 rectangular table, although I’d go for the model with the wheels in future, while the Hay CPH 90 desk is just a thing of beauty with that Scandi style that sets off any home or office.
The two flatpack options are more for everyday use, and both are perfectly suited to home use, with the Habitat Nomad offering style and storage, while the industrial design of the Ikea fjallbo offers plenty of flexibility and affordability.
