8 best washable rugs, tried and tested for an easy-clean home

Rugs can transform a room, adding colour, texture and a cosy feel underfoot. They’re also practical, helping to absorb sound and define separate areas in open-plan homes. The downside? Keeping them clean can be expensive, with professional services costing hundreds of pounds. But the best washable rugs offer a simpler alternative.

I have rugs throughout my home, from the hallway to the kitchen, where they bring a little personality to an otherwise functional space. Inevitably, they pick up their fair share of dirt and spills, but being able to throw them in the washing machine makes keeping them fresh much less of a chore.

This convenience is particularly appealing if you share your home with children or pets, although washable rugs aren't completely immune to staining. Tough marks can still linger, so don't expect every spill to disappear without a trace.

The size can make a difference, too. Before buying, check that your chosen rug will actually fit inside your washing machine. Smaller styles and runners are generally easier to manage at home, while anything over 160 x 230cm may need a trip to a laundrette with larger-capacity machines.

Ruggable rayne pink and orange rug

Rating: 5/5

Image from: 8 best washable rugs, tried and tested for an easy-clean home

Best: washable rug overall

Why we love it

  • Huge variety of designs
  • Built-in non-slip
  • Stays flat under opening doors

Take note

  • Non-slip backing takes longer to dry fully

I’ve always loved the look of antique rugs, but not the prices that usually come with them. Ruggable has hundreds of options, designed both in-house and as collaborations with the likes of Jonathan Adler, Keith Haring, Disney and more.

The runner rug I tried is inspired by global design and pairs tonally with my red hallway. I like that there’s enough pattern in it to mask light staining, which, over time, is inevitable. The machine-washable USP will take care of more serious marks, like the coffee I spilt over the lightest areas, where it would show up most.

Ruggable’s options are unmatched (Abha Shah/The Independent)

At just 7mm high, the tuft is low enough to slip under doors without bunching or dragging. Ruggable used to sell its rugs in two parts with a non-slip velcro-type backing supporting a washable upper cover. However, this runner is just one piece, so everything can be thrown into the washing machine when it’s time – built-in nonslip backing and all.

After washing, my rug dried quickly overnight when positioned beside an open window on a drying rack – which is what I’d expect from a polyester design. There was a slight curl at the top end, but nothing that couldn’t be fixed with a heavy pair of boots.

Weaver Green fairisle coral rug

Rating: 3.5/5

Image from: 8 best washable rugs, tried and tested for an easy-clean home

Best: eco-friendly washable rug

Why we love it

  • Fully recyclable

Take note

  • No non-slip backing included

Crafted in Devon, Weaver Green is as green as it gets. My rug arrived in entirely plastic-free packaging, held in a tight coil with fabric ties and labelled with string and cardboard. In fact, the only plastic present is in the rug itself: this fairisle design is made solely from discarded plastic bottles, removing waste from landfill and making it fully recyclable once it reaches the end of its life cycle. I rate that Weaver Green has considered what happens once the rug is no longer usable – fellow homewares brands, take note.

This is my sustainable choice (Abha Shah/The Independent)

Aside from doing good, it looks great too – even after a spin in the washing machine. The four colours in the mix didn’t fade post-wash and promise to liven up any room while the tasselled trim adds a boho vibe, proving fairisle isn’t just for winter.

A downside? It doesn’t come with a non-slip backing as standard, so this is best placed on existing carpet, layered over another rug, or anchored with heavy furniture, which will also eliminate any crumpling after flat-drying. You can also keep it in place with double-sided tape, like DIY Doctor’s (£12.99, Amazon.co.uk).

Furn Tibetan tiger coral washable indoor outdoor rug

Rating: 3/5

Image from: 8 best washable rugs, tried and tested for an easy-clean home

Best: washable rug for patios and conservatories

Why we love it

  • Versatile usage
  • Contemporary design
  • Robust

Take note

  • Uneven edges feels a bit careless

It’s all well and good turning your garden into an extra room in the summer, but when autumn rolls in, it can be challenging to put everything away – especially if you don’t have much space to begin with.

Thankfully, this Furn rug can be used inside as well as out. The colour is protected with a UV-resistant finish, and the polyester flatweave design fares well in a range of weather conditions – although do hang it up and allow it to fully dry after heavy storms.

This works for indoors and outside (Abha Shah/The Independent)

The edges aren’t the neatest, but it will brighten up your outdoor space without you getting too precious about it. This was another rug that emerged virtually dry and laid completely flush against the floor after a wash, the polyester fibres completely clean of the stains I’d spilled on it for testing. If you’re planning to use it indoors on hard floors, you’ll need a rug grip or tape to keep it steady as this doesn’t come with any non-slip coating. It essentially feels like a heavy blanket, which does make machine washing much easier.

The playful Tibetan tiger theme is a great way to create a focal point in any space, be it anchoring an outdoor dining set or adding colour to kitchen or entryway floors.

Scion Oakham washable rug

Rating: 3/5

Image from: 8 best washable rugs, tried and tested for an easy-clean home

Best: washable rug for midcentury flair

Why we love it

  • Durable
  • Interesting design

Take note

  • Bit plasticky looking

Bring a splash of colour and pattern to your interiors with Scion’s midcentury-themed rug, which comes in four colour palettes. An anti-slip backing means you won’t need to shell out for an underlay to keep it stable on hard floors, and it won’t move if you’re layering it over fitted carpet either.

This is a practical and good looking rug (Abha Shah/The Independent)

It’s more practical than luxurious with a pile height of 1cm, making it suited to high-traffic spots of the house, like the living room or kitchen. If you have kids, this would be ideal for a playroom. I like that the non-slip backing isn’t too rigid; it folds into the washing machine drum easily. A half hour wash was all it took to rid the rug of stains, and it lay back down on the floor without curled edges. The colours looked as vibrant as they did going into the drum.

This is very much a function-first rug – it looks synthetic, unlike other polyester rugs that masquerade as cotton or wool. While reinforcing the edges, the visible overlocked hems feel a bit too rough and ready for my liking. I’d keep it in the kitchen or conservatory to liven up the space without making it the star of the show.

Next light natural soft scallop washable rug

Rating: 3.5/5

Image from: 8 best washable rugs, tried and tested for an easy-clean home

Best: washable rug for a nod to current trends

Why we love it

  • Super plush
  • Highly textured
  • Easy to vacuum

Take note

  • Rubberised backing not as ‘sticky’ on hard floors as others

Scallops continue to prove themselves the interior catch of the day, as demonstrated by Next. This is the kind of look that will sit in seamlessly with any interior style, though minimalists will appreciate its neutral, textural charms more than most. The thick pile – and it is the thickest I tried – is an utter dream underfoot, although I felt it was a whisker away from feeling like an oversized bathmat.

There’s rubberised backing to stop it from slipping (Next recommends using an additional rug grip for added stability), but that didn’t interfere with my ability to fold it up. I’ll store it away until the cooler months arrive, when its cosiness will come into its own.

Since it’s made from polyester, this rug dries quickly, making deep machine wash cleans less of a room-hogging ordeal if you need to dry it indoors. I spot cleaned a red wine spill off the long-fibres using a household cleaner on a microfibre cloth, but repeated soiling will require a thorough spin in the washing machine.

Hug Rug oval eclipse eco‑washable rug

Rating: 4/5

Image from: 8 best washable rugs, tried and tested for an easy-clean home

Best: washable rug for contemporary style

Why we love it

  • UK made from recycled materials
  • Comes with a five-year guarantee

Take note

  • Flatwoven, so you don’t get that plush, sinking-in feeling

The kind of rug that can add a little pizzazz to practically any room, Hug Rug’s design is crafted from recycled polyester and comes in five size options. It’s part of the eco-washable range, which is full of bright, modern rugs where this oval eclipse look is amongst the most pared back.

The graphic look rendered in earthy tones adds interest without overpowering the room and it comes with a non-slip backing made from latex rubber. I usually have a slightly larger rug between the sofas in my living room, but the 120 x 185cm option made the space feel a little larger. That said, it feels like a more practical design than a statement piece. While the all-in-one rug is machine washable at 30C, I found that spot cleaning using a microfibre cloth erased splashes of Malbec quickly and dried fast. Light scrubbing with the microfibre didn’t seem to affect the overall look of the rug, and once dried, I couldn’t detect any difference from the stained area to the rest of the design.

Ikea starreklinte rug

Rating: 3/5

Image from: 8 best washable rugs, tried and tested for an easy-clean home

Best: washable rug for rental properties

Why we love it

  • Stylish enough to fit with most interiors schemes

Take note

  • Underlay sold separately

A simple rug sporting a black dotted design, Ikea sticks to a minimal look with this washable rug, made from flatwoven cotton. The neutral look lends itself well to rental properties or first homes, but it must be laid on carpet as it doesn’t come with a non-slip backing. Take it from me, using it as is on laminate flooring will trigger a spike in your BPM; it slips and slides like a surfboard on water without that rubber anchor. Alternatively, you can place it under furniture, like a TV stand or coffee table, to add understated texture and colour.

As well as being able to wash the rug when it needs a clean, you can iron this design too – just ensure the temperature doesn’t exceed 150C. This is useful, as the rug emerges from the washing machine crumpled – but it does mean adding to your ironing pile. Swings and roundabouts.

In terms of colour, I noticed a slight dimming on the cream. It’s nothing to cry over for the first washing, but I imagine frequent washing over years will mean you may have to replace it more quickly than any other rug on this list.

As for the price? It has a famously agreeable Ikea price tag (and not an Allen key in sight).

Habitat washable black and white runner and mat set

Rating: 3/5

Image from: 8 best washable rugs, tried and tested for an easy-clean home

Best: washable rugs for busy hallways

Why we love it

  • Affordable
  • Great for high-traffic areas

Take note

  • Not my aesthetic, but my neighbour loved it

A beacon for affordable interiors, here Habitat offers a two-for-one deal with its black-and-white spotted design.

This is a backed hallway mat (Abha Shah/The Independent)

This hallway set includes a washable door mat and runner to sit alongside a shoe rack or hallway bench, trapping outside dirt and moisture so that they don’t track into the rest of the house. It’s backed with grippy latex to stop it sliding around over hard floors. The pile is soft enough to feel cosy underfoot, even after a spin in the washing machine, but it just doesn’t feel or look as luxe as some of the other rugs I tried. It does scrub up superbly after stains though; not even a hefty squirt of ketchup could ruin this design. The rug air dried quickly overnight, so they were ready to go back into position by the morning. When the weather is on-side, drying them outside would mean an even faster turnaround.

At this price point and style, I’d say it’s best for uni halls, rentals, and first homes.

Your questions about washable rugs answered

What is the best washable rug?

In this particular space, Ruggable is the brand du jour, and since trying its range, I can see why. The sheer variety of shapes, colours and sizes means you’ll always find one to fit your space. Not only do they look impressive, but they’re ridiculously easy to keep looking and smelling fresh too. If that’s not a formula for shopping success, I don’t know what is.

How I tested washable rugs

Interior brands are cottoning onto the charms of washable rugs: you can now find them everywhere from specialists like Ruggable to high street hero H&M. Here’s how I tested the rugs in the reviews below:

Will a washable rug actually fit in my washing machine?

This is dependent on two factors: the size of the rug and your machine’s drum capacity. Runners and small accent rugs should be fine in most machines, but a medium area rug will need a drum capacity of up to 7kg.

If you’re trying to wash a large rug that measures around 160 x 230cm, your machine’s drum should be able to bear up to 9kg.

Anything larger than that should be folded into a laundry bag to take to your local laundrette.

Can you tumble dry machine washable rugs?

It’s best to consult your rug’s care label here. Some will say they are tumble-dry safe, but most rugs feature a synthetic non-slip backing that will fall apart under high temperatures. Your best bet is to completely air-dry a washed rug over a drying rack so air can flow from all angles. Make sure the rug is completely dry before you put it back in its position.

How to dry machine washable rugs in winter

When strong sunlight retires for the year, you may have to dry your washable rugs indoors. Place the rug flat on a drying rack beside a radiator or near a dehumidifier to accelerate the process. Synthetic rugs, like those made from polyester, will dry noticeably faster than natural wool and cotton. Alternatively, wait for a dry but windy day - plenty of those in British winter - to line-dry your rug naturally.

Can you vacuum machine washable rugs?

Yes! Not only can you, but you should do it regularly to get rid of surface-level dirt. Stop corners from getting sucked into your machine by vacuuming on the lowest suction setting and working from the centre outwards. You might have to do a few more passes than usual, but it’s preferable to wrestling with a vacuum cleaner head. It’s also a good idea to see if your vacuum cleaner’s other attachments perform better on pile or flatweave.

Do all machine washable rugs require an underlay?

Some come with a non-slip backing, while others are sold without. Layering a rug over fitted carpet will offer some level of stability, which you can further enhance by securing corners and edges with purpose-made rug tape. High-quality ones will work on carpet and laminate.

Why you can trust IndyBest reviews

Abha Shaha spent seven years working as a shopping editor, testing all sorts of products professionally. As someone who already owns and loves machine-washable rugs on her floors, she also knows how they fare long-term – she’s had some for two years, and they still look as fresh as the day she unwrapped them. While her personal interiors style is maximalist-leaning (the more pattern, the better), she appreciates the quiet appeal of a neutral rug and pile you can properly scrunch your toes into.
