83-year-old gets Maulidur Rasul award for raising adopted Muslim daughter

EARLIER today, retired kindergarten teacher Chee Hoi Lan received the Icon of Ibu Sejati (True Mother) award from Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. 

This occurred during the Maulidur Rasul celebrations at World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Chee, 83, raised Rohana Abdullah, 20, since she was two months old, having been abandoned by her mother when she was an infant. Chee received recognition for caring for Rohana despite their difference of religions.

Chee, who attended the event in a wheelchair, told reporters: "I am very happy (to receive the award)."

Rohana, was also stateless until very recently, having been awarded Malaysian citizenship in April after her case was taken up by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Meanwhile, the Perdana Maulidur Rasul Award 1444H/ 2022 M went to Tan Sri Syed Zainal Abidin Mohd Tahir, who is also a board member of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIIWP) and chairman of its Education Committee. 

Others who received the Maulidul Rasul Award included Universiti Malaya Centre for Civilisation Dialogue director, Prof Datuk Dr Azizan Baharudin; executive producer for Islamic content on TV3 and TV9, Ahmad Noor Sulaiman; and Yayasan ZIKAY chairman, Mohd Khay Ibrahim. – The Vibes, October 9, 2022
