Nick Nolte has made his first red carpet appearance in four years to promote his new movie at the Venice Film Festival.
The 85-year-old three-time Oscar nominee posed for photos Tuesday alongside his Company co-star Casey Affleck, who also co-wrote and directed the gothic anthology film.
Nolte, who was named People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 1992, last appeared on a red carpet in 2022 at the premiere of The Golden Voice at the Philadelphia Film Festival.
Company follows a mysterious woman named Evelyn who “arrives uninvited at a holiday gathering and tells the story of Tom, an aging hermit [Nolte] who rescues a stranded actress during a Colorado blizzard in 1953,” an official synopsis of the film reads.
“To pass the night, the actress recounts an older tale of a farming couple who take in a troubled young drifter as a series of grisly murders spreads fear across the frontier.”
Asked by reporters how he prepared to take on a “hermit” character in the new film, Nolte said, per People: “It’s preparation, it’s the amount of time. You get the story, and then I started to prepare for it.
“And if you’re lucky, the timing of your preparation matches the shooting schedule, and you hit moments that you didn’t know if you could conjure them up if they are not. But you know, if you’re working with a good director, he’s aware of this too and doesn’t push it or he doesn’t command it — he coaxes it along, and together you kind of figure out a way to play.”
Affleck chimed in about working with Nolte, saying there was “no coaxing necessary.”
“It was extraordinary to watch, I’m sure Caylee will agree, that Nick could go to sort of vulnerable and emotional places very, very quickly, and over and over again if necessary,” Affleck said.
“It was the kind of skill, I think, that comes from just a lifetime of doing it and doing it well. I was very happy with the work that everybody did,” Affleck continued.
“Everyone brought something different, and when Nick came on set everyone was excited and eager to see what was going to happen, to be able to watch him work and nobody was disappointed because every take — there was not a wasted take and trying to pick which one to use was really the only difficulty.”
Company marks Nolte’s fourth film in the last two years, following The Golden Voice, Die My Love and Crime 101.
He received Oscar nominations for his leading roles in The Prince of Tides (1992), Affliction (1999) and for his supporting role in Warrior (2012).
Nolte received the “Sexiest Man Alive” title in 1992, with People describing him as “big-lug Adonis with the heart of gold.”
