His children were later informed of the break-in and rushed an unconscious Zheng to Manjung Hospital for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries at 3pm on the same day.

Wife seen calling for help at roadside

According to a resident named Yu, he told the Chinese daily that he was riding his motorcycle to the market at 4.50am when he saw Zheng’s wife covered in blood at the roadside.

“She begged me to go to her house and save her husband. When I found Zheng lying in a pool of blood in the living room, he was still able to speak though his speech was unclear.”

Yu added that saw multiple injuries on Zheng’s head and body and immediately called another neighbor to the scene, who then contacted Zheng’s children.

Lone intruder?

Yu also said that according to Zheng’s wife, there was only one thief who carried out the break-in.

The thief was believed to have cut off the electricity supply before entering the house so that the couple wouldn’t be able to identify him.”

Meanwhile, Zheng’s relatives told Sin Chew Daily that the elderly couple’s mobile phones and wallets were believed to have been stolen by the thief.

They added that a rusty axe and a knife that did not belong to Zheng were found outside the house, but it cannot be determined whether they were the murder weapons as no bloodstains were detected.

Based on the couple’s injuries, police have ruled out the possibility that a knife was involved in the attack and believe the thief had used a wooden stick or blunt object.

When contacted, Manjung district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hasbullah Abd Rahman said a statement will be released soon.
