Teh tarik is getting a musical tribute this Merdeka as homegrown brand 888 Tea & Coffee brings together three Malaysian acts for “Bersama Kita Tertarik”.

Supported by Tourism Malaysia, the collaboration features Alif Satar & The Locos, Danny Koo and Kidd Santhe, who come together to celebrate Malaysia’s multicultural identity and the shared experiences built around the nation’s beloved drink.

The initiative is part of Visit Malaysia 2026-2027 and aims to introduce the culture and hospitality behind teh tarik to a wider international audience.

The power of teh tarik

From mamak stalls and kopitiams to family gatherings, teh tarik has long been part of everyday Malaysian life, creating spaces for conversations, friendships and shared memories.

Deputy director-general (Promotions) of Tourism Malaysia Mohd Akbal Setia said teh tarik had grown beyond being an everyday beverage to become part of the country’s culinary heritage.

888 Coffee & Tea is collaborating with Tourism Malaysia as a strategic partner for a national tourism initiative.

“Teh tarik connects people across communities and generations. Beyond its ordinary role, it has become a reflection of Malaysia’s culinary heritage, diverse culture and warm hospitality,” he said.

He added that the drink’s distinctive preparation and cultural significance could offer visitors an authentic Malaysian experience, further strengthening the country’s appeal as a gastronomy tourism destination.

A promising collaboration

888 Tea & Coffee executive director Alvin Ang See Ming said the collaboration reflected the company’s roots as a family-oriented tea merchant.

“As a homegrown Malaysian brand, we have grown through generations while staying true to our roots and the traditions that connect people. Through ‘Bersama Kita Tertarik’, we hope to celebrate the Malaysian spirit of connection and highlight how a simple tradition like enjoying a cup of teh tarik can bring people closer, regardless of background,” he said.

The accompanying music video sees the three acts bringing their individual musical styles and cultural influences together, with the collaboration serving as a reminder of the common experiences that unite Malaysians despite their different backgrounds.

Set to launch ahead of Merdeka Day on Aug 31, the project also coincides with the introduction of 888 Teh Tarik Malaysia, the brand’s latest beverage blend.
