Sunset, a cool breeze, lounging on a sun lounger, and a mojito in hand. In Langkawi, Marriott Bonvoy treats these as essentials for every guest. Your stay might just be the easiest thing to tick off when planning your next trip.

After landing at Langkawi International Airport, our 96-hour adventure officially began. If you’re feeling tired after the one-hour flight, a foot massage seems like a must. So, we headed to our first stay—The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa—for a quick fix. Its award-winning Heavenly Spa by Westin is truly renowned. If you asked us how good their masseurs are, we wouldn’t be able to tell you because the moment they touched our feet, we immediately fell asleep.

Fresh from our massage, we were whisked away to our next experience—a sound healing and yoga session set against the gentle drizzle of rain. The soothing sound of singing bowls blended with the soft patter of rain. There was only one word to describe the feeling: therapeutic.

As dusk settled in, we hopped on a buggy to dinner at Tide, but we truly didn’t expect what we were about to see. Guests were gathered around a long table overlooking the beach, with an exquisite seafood spread adding to the already stunning setting. But wait until the fire performers came in. Traditional music began to play as flames emerged from their mouths. The performers literally danced in a “red rain”—one of the most unforgettable fire performances we’ve ever witnessed.

From St. Regis to Aloft: Two Sides of Langkawi

The next morning, we transferred to The St. Regis Langkawi. Before checking in, we were served The St. Regis’ signature cocktail—the Bloody Mary. It was invented by a French bartender while working at the King Cole Bar at The St. Regis New York. The drink’s refreshing flavours hit us right away with the very first sip.

After settling in, we headed to Aloft Langkawi Pantai Tengah for lunch and a few activities, including a batik painting workshop and a cocktail-making session. Although we weren’t staying at the hotel, we still felt the warmth of its hospitality. The staff welcomed us like old friends—from the little gestures and shared laughs to the playful jokes—while remaining thoughtful and attentive throughout. It’s the kind of genuine hospitality that makes you feel at home and not something every hotel can offer.

If you’re looking for an intimate overwater retreat, KayuPuti at The St. Regis Langkawi sounds like a pretty good idea. Set above the Andaman Sea, KayuPuti takes its name from the Malay words for “white wood,” a subtle reflection of its design by renowned architect and designer Bill Bensley. Here, expect upscale pan-Asian cuisine featuring fresh local seafood and seasonal produce, brought together through a blend of regional and global flavours. During our dinner, one of my favourites was the Asam Pedas Risotto, paired with spicy lobster, blue belly shrimp, and daun kesum—a refined take on familiar local flavours.

What could you possibly do at night in Langkawi? We ended the evening at Dream Forest Langkawi, an immersive, multi-sensory night walk set within an ancient rainforest in Lubuk Semilang. The 1.2 km trail uses projection mapping, lights, and soundscapes to bring Malaysian folklore and legends to life. It was one “wow” moment after another, with something new and unexpected around every corner.

Before even entering my room at The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi, I already knew it would be my favourite stay of the trip. Set within a tranquil bay, the resort spans expansive grounds surrounded by lush landscapes, pristine beaches and a 10-million-year-old rainforest. It feels wonderfully secluded, with plenty of space to unwind and reconnect with nature.

And you really can’t miss Dayang Mastura’s private yacht voyage, an exclusive charter experience by The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi, for an unforgettable sunset sail across the Andaman Sea. During our cruise, we even spotted dolphins and eagles along the way. With a selection of refreshments and an onboard dining experience, it was the perfect way to wind down the day.

On the last day of our stay, we visited the Sea Cucumber Discovery Centre, where in-house marine biologist Fadzli led an engaging talk on sea cucumbers, sharing his knowledge and passion for these fascinating creatures. The visit also reflects The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi’s commitment to nature education, with the resort developing its own educational programmes and modules.

To wrap up the trip, we headed to The Beach Grill & Bar, nestled beside the resort’s main pool and overlooking the pristine shores. The beachfront restaurant offers a relaxed yet refined setting, serving fresh seafood from the Andaman Sea alongside Western favourites and flame-grilled steaks.
