Malaysia will go ahead with its economic stimulus package to offset the negative impact brought about by the Covid-19 outbreak. This confirmation comes in the midst of widespread political uncertainty following the dissolution of the Malaysian Cabinet earlier this week.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is acting as interim prime minister following his resignation from the official position on Monday, will be announcing the economic stimulus package tomorrow 27 February at 4pm. In a post on Twitter, Dr Mahathir said that he had just finished a meeting with top officials in the Ministry of Finance regarding the economic stimulus package.

Yesterday, former Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said in a statement that Dr Mahathir would be taking over the stimulus package and announcing it at a later date. According to Guan Eng, the final details of the package had already been submitted to the prime minister a day before Dr Mahathir’s resignation.

The economic stimulus package is intended to assist sectors of the Malaysian economy that have been hit by the Covid-19 epidemic. Make sure to check the RinggitPlus blog tomorrow from 4pm onwards as we break down all the ways this economic stimulus package will affect you and your money.
