Navigation services such as Waze and Google maps are basically essential to drivers today. Gone are the days of relying on those big sign boards to help us reach our destinations. Technology allows us to have a voice provide navigation instructions in real-time and even shows our vehicle on the road. However, many of us face a loss of signal whenever we enter a tunnel. The solution is here because Malaysia will be receiving Waze beacons!

Waze beacons are the solution to the loss of signal whenever we enter a tunnel or go underground. It is already available in countries around the world such as U.S, Brazil, and Australia. However, Malaysia will actually be the first ever SEA country to install the service.

Waze is now working with Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) to help drivers navigate better. Bluetooth-enabled devices known as Waze beacons will be installed in TRX’s basement roads. This is because TRX has many different points that lead to various connected roads and car parks.

To explain, the beacons are battery-operated, low-energy transmitters installed on tunnel walls. Then, a wireless signal is transmitted to mobile devices that can support Bluetooth. As a result, our mobile phones will now receive the signal to provide real-time navigation information.

The aim of the Waze beacons is to help drivers avoid hesitation and confusion. With access to a connection underground, drivers will be able to make better decisions on where to go. This will also help in decreasing traffic as everyone is able to drive confidently in the right direction. Additionally, those using Google maps will also benefit from the programme.

Moving on, the Waze beacons are now available in Basements 2 and 3 of TRX. Furthermore, this is currently a pilot-scale project to test the effectiveness of it. Once successful, the service will be expanded across Kuala Lumpur.
