COVID-19: Malaysia records 31 new cases today, a record low since MCO started

The Ministry of Health continues to register a decline of new COVID-19 cases in Malaysia. At today’s update, there are 31 new cases, which is the lowest ever since the movement control order was imposed on 18th March 2020. This brings the total number of cases to 5,851.

Unfortunately, there’s one new death recorded which brings the total number of fatalities to 100. Meanwhile, 75 cases have recovered today and a total of 4,032 patients have recovered and discharged so far. The current recovery rate is 68.91% while the mortality rate is 1.71%.

At the moment, there are 1,719 cases remaining which are currently receiving treatment. 36 cases are still in ICU with 17 requiring respiratory support. The number of total active cases has been declining daily since the mid of April and this is an indication that the MCO has helped to flatten the curve.

As Malaysia enters the 4th phase of the MCO, the country has been recording less than 100 daily cases for 12 consecutive days. For the past 7 days straight, the number of daily recoveries has exceeded the number of new cases recorded.

According to Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Malaysia has no recorded cases of recovered COVID-19 patients getting reinfected again. Previously, he has also warned that recovered patients must continue to take necessary measures as the antibody response developed during recovery is insufficient to protect them from being reinfected by the virus for the second time.

He reminded that the MCO is not capable of eliminating COVID-19 completely and the community must be prepared to face the pandemic for an extended period of time. Therefore, the public must continue to practice social distancing and good personal hygiene by washing their hands frequently with soap and water.
