Real Madrid great Roberto Carlos has revealed how close he came to signing for Chelsea.

Roberto Carlos admits he held talks with Chelsea as he was leaving Real in 2007.

“Everything was agreed with Chelsea, but there was one clause in the contract that they really wanted to include, but I didn't," Roberto Carlos told FourFourTwo. "This is the only reason I did not get to England.

"I had to spend a certain number of matches in a row to get an extension of the contract. Usually it was 12-15 games, but I was no longer a boy and was worried about injuries that would not allow me to reach this mark.

"But I was very pleased with the interest of Chelsea. I had a meeting with Roman Abramovich, we had a sincere conversation. I already knew Roman, because as a player of Real Madrid I met presidents and club owners around the world."

Roberto Carlos went onto sign with Fenerbahce before eventually joining Anzhi.
