Former Barcelona assistant coach Juan Carlos Unzue is announcing today he has been diagnosed with ALS.
Unzue was last coach of Girona and says the diagnosis means he will be forced into retirement at the age of 53.
He played for Osasuna, Barcelona and Sevilla ahead of joining Barca's coaching team under Frank Rijkaard. He then was part of Pep Guardiola's staff.
Unzue worked as Luis Enrique's No2 at Celta Vigo and Barca before branching out on his own with Girona.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) affects the central nervous system and progresses to paralysis. As of today, there is no known cure.
