Should politicians be upgrading their state cars during a time of general economic slowdown in the country? That is the question that has been stirring among Malaysians after Perak state Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal was seen in a brand new Lexus luxury sedan during his visits to constituents within the state.
Just recently, Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal has been seen in a brand-new white Lexus ES sedan, which starts at around RM288,663.50 on the official Lexus Malaysia website. This brand new luxury sedan will replace the Perak MB’s previous Toyota Camry and serves as his official car, paid for through state coffers.
The car was most notably seen when the Menteri Besar was visiting SMK Methodist (P), SMJK Sam Tet, and SMJK Sam Tet today (24th June). In speaking with members of the media, he said that the Lexus was purchased with a considerable discount from dealerships, according to the Star.
“We got a good discount of between 40% and 50% for the 2019 car.”
“The car belongs to the state, we can still afford to buy,” he adds.
His Toyota Camry on the other hand has been sold off to a member of the state executive council. In addition, one out of 16 Toyota Camrys bought last year by the state for use by executive councilors and state officials has also been sold to one of their longest serving legal advisors for the sum of RM100,000.
He added that the state will also be considering to sell off some of its other cars, including some Mercedes-Benz S Class sedans, through an open tender.
