Former Arsenal academy chief Andries Jonker insists the club's English youngsters can form the spine of a successful new team.

Telstar boss Jonker helped develop the likes of Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson, Bukayo Saka and Joe Willock during his stint as academy manager between 2014 and 2017.

Jonker told the Mirror: “I'm watching with a big interest, because that's what we were working for over a long period of time.

“We had an outstanding team of staff working on that project for almost three years, and of course you're looking for the results.

“It's not just about having a job, in football and in academy work it's trying to create something so we're following Arsenal with big interest.

“I'm very, very pleased. In my experience, the way to build up a top team is to have a structure based on players you raised in your own club.

“Most of those players that are getting into the first team now were nine years old at Hale End. They eat Arsenal, they drink Arsenal and they sleep Arsenal.

“If they succeed to come into the first team then you have created a basement to be successful over a couple of years, and that's the job for Arsenal to find some more experienced players to help them.

“Then you can build up a really, really good team playing for the title."
