Roma have terminated their ten-year deal with US sportswear giant Nike four years early, reports, www.sportspromedia.com/.
Signed in March 2013, the original deal was set to provide Roma with a basic €4.2 million (US$4.78 million) a year from next season but will now finish at the end of the 2019/20 campaign. The club have signed a one-year agreement with Nike for 2020/21 but Francesco Calvo, Roma's chief operating officer, said the club will now "explore new opportunities in the equipment and licensing space".
With bonuses and signing fees Roma's contract with Nike was reportedly worth about €5 million a year (US$5.7 million), which is significantly less than the eight-figure sums brought in by rivals Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, and even Napoli's expiring Kappa contract.
According to Corriere dello Sport, both Roma chief executive Guido Fienga and Calvo were unhappy with the Nike deal and are considering rival US brand Under Armour as an alternative.
