Health Director-General, Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

“When you are in a public space, you have to wear a face mask if you’re in an area that makes it difficult to practice social distancing or a high-risk area. Hence, we highly encourage you to wear a face mask but it hasn’t been made mandatory yet,” said Dr Noor Hisham regarding the use of such preventive gear.

He added that the decision to make wearing face masks in public compulsory is still being discussed by authorities as making this ruling official would put heavy consequences on these offenders that will need to pay the hefty fine of RM1,000 or face being jailed.

“We are monitoring the action we should take, whether it be charging fines or a period of jail time for those who refuse to wear face masks in public.”

Nonetheless, the Health Director-General stressed that the Ministry of Health promotes the wearing of face masks as it helps reduce the risk of being infected by 65%. “The important areas where face masks are definitely required are when you’re flying in an aeroplane or sitting in a crowded bus or in instances where we cannot avoid coming into close contact with people. In these situations, it is necessary for you to wear a face mask,” he added.

Do you think the implementation of this offence will encourage others to wear face masks?
