Blues manager Frank Lampard is determined to land a new first-choice goalkeeper this summer after dropping Kepa for the crunch Premier League meeting with Wolves on Sunday.
Onana is among a number of goalkeepers linked with a move to Stamford Bridge but the Blues were initially put off by Ajax's asking price.
In April, Onana said: "My time has come to take a step."
